operate 24 hours a day 7 days a week.More than the calm and reassuring voice on the other end of the phone, the Emergency Medical Dispatcher (EMD) is the first point of contact in life and death situations. EMD's deliver pre- arrival of an ambulance or patient transport crew.
Working as a EMD would give you insight into the work of ambulance crew. However, to move into work as a paramedic, you would need to meet the same entry requirements as someone from outside the service.

General requirements
A major component of the role is also to dispatch and coordinate ambulance resources across the Northern Territory in metropolitan areas, Darwin, Gove, Katherine, Tennant Creek and Alice Springs
The role of the EMD requires you to be calm, quick thinking and have the ability to multi-task. You’ll need to be assertive and be able to cope under pressure.
Being able to type (ideally at 40 words per minute with 95% accuracy), multitask, use a computer, read maps, listen and forward plan whilst providing clear and authoritative direction in a calm manner, are essential skills required to perform the duties of an Emergency Medical Dispatcher.
EMD’s are required to hold a Provide First Aid certificate prior to employment and undergo communications training. This training is provided by St John Ambulance.
Terms and Conditions of employment
EMD’s are required to work a 24/7 rotating roster, working two days, two nights and four off. EMD’s are entitled to 10 weeks annual leave per annum plus a 17.7% leave loading. They are entitled to 15 Days sick leave per annum.
EMD’s progress is determined by competition of all training and demonstration of being able to take and dispatch calls solo.
