The Sunshine Coast is one of the fastest growing regions in Australia, with comprehensive health services expanding with the opening of the Sunshine Coast University Private Hospital in 2013, and Sunshine Coast University Hospital is under construction and planned to open in 2016. In addition, a wide range of community and primary care services are available.

The School of Nursing, Midwifery and Paramedicine, aims to provide excellence in teaching and research across theses disciplines. There is a strong emphasis on interprofessional learning and engagement with health agencies in the region. Students have opportunities to work closely with health services and health professionals to develop professional attributes during their coursework.

The School has a strong research profile. The USC NURTURE Research Cluster located within the School builds on its discipline strengths to maximise interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research collaboration. Our aims are to engage in research focused on delivering health dividends to the local, national and international community through testing of clinical, health service and educational innovations, development of multidisciplinary research teams and the translation of research into practice. Within the NURTURE Cluster there are three programs of research focusing on Maternal and Child Health; Care of Adults with Acute and Complex Conditions; and Health Professional Education.

At the University of the Sunshine Coast, a Lecturer (Level B) is an academic who is engaged in all three aspects of academic work – teaching, research and engagement. The lecturer is an effective teacher, is maintaining and developing research activity and can have responsibility for research projects and for supervision of candidates for higher degrees by research. A Lecturer makes important connections with and contributions to their discipline within the community. They have involvement in school and faculty development and can also have some involvement in University development.

A Senior Lecturer (Level C) makes significant contributions to the education programs of the School. This can be demonstrated through leadership in curriculum design, teaching and course evaluation, and outputs from areas such as scholarship (publications), grants for teaching innovation (especially external competitive grants), leadership in curriculum design and development and external and internal recognition. A Senior Lecturer also plays a role in research by leading and participating in research projects, particularly in research that relates to paramedic practice, and supervises candidates for higher degrees by research. Evidence of the level of research can be demonstrated through publications in quality journals of national/international standing, National Competitive Grants and leadership as a supervisor and mentor. A Senior Lecturer also makes significant connections with, and contributions to, the discipline within the region and beyond. The role requires involvement in the development of the discipline, which is recognised and acknowledged by peers nationally.


Be an effective teacher and provide leadership in teaching by: maintaining currency in Paramedic practice maintaining currency in effective learning and teaching practices in the discipline designing, developing, evaluating and improving curricula lecturing, tutoring, facilitating clinical practice, conducting workshops, seminars and field trips designing and implementing formative and summative assessment activities demonstrating and maintaining high standards in teaching linking research to teaching and learning contributing to the development and maintenance of a productive and collegial academic environment that is conducive to high levels of engagement and standards of performance in learning and teaching.Senior Lecturer duties also include: participating in and leading learning and teaching development processes within the School/Faculty; developing and maintaining strategic partnerships that enhance the quality of learning and teaching within the University and beyond. Be an effective researcher and provide leadership in research and research training by: purposefully developing focused expertise in paramedic practice developing/contributing to a productive research and evidence-based practice culture designing and conducting research and writing research reports securing research grants, particularly external competitive grant successfully supervising candidates for higher degrees by research demonstrating and maintaining high standards in research contributing to the development and maintenance of a positive academic environment that is conducive to high levels of engagement and standards of performance in research.Senior Lecturer duties also include: establishing research teams and leading research projects developing and maintaining strategic research partnerships being invited to conduct research with colleagues at other universities and give addresses in various research and research training fora. Maintain substantial engagement with regional and professional communities as a scholarly practice through which discipline knowledge and solutions to health problems are advanced. Provide service to the University by contributing to the achievement of its mission. This includes: providing high quality, responsive, accountable education active engagement with the university and other communities participating in strategic partnerships at local, national and international levels communicating appropriately and effectively with students, other staff and individuals outside the University.Senior Lecturer duties also include: making contributions to the achievement of significant University outcomes as a member or chair of committees and working parties taking on roles of responsibility within the University, such as key coordination roles making contributions to significant projects that advance the achievement of the University’s strategic priorities. Other duties within the range of skills normally associated with this classification, including those associated with an evolving research, teaching, learning and professional environment, as required.
