Responsibilities
Helicopter Paramedics are part of a multidisciplinary team working collaboratively to deliver specialist aviation, anaesthetics, medical and surgical interventions in the out of hospital environment and during inter-hospital patient retrievals. Helicopter Paramedics are required to work in hazardous and remote environments with minimal support to deliver specialist access, patient assessment, out of hospital care and extrication of patients.
As an Intensive Care Flight Paramedic or Advanced Care Rescue Paramedic you may be dispatched by helicopter to a variety of incidents including Primary emergency response, Search and Rescue over land and water, or secondary transfers from primary medical facilities to base hospitals.
The Position
Aeromedical operational environments are complex and require a high level of skill, knowledge, flexibility and co-ordination to deliver the service safely and effectively. Helicopter Paramedics are part of a multidisciplinary team working collaboratively to deliver advanced patient access, critical care and extrication within an integrated safety and risk management system.
Flight paramedics are required to undertake the full duties of an Ambulance Officer as defined in the Award. In addition to the Award requirements of a paramedic specialist, Helicopter Paramedics will:
Undertake duties in accordance with Aeromedical Operational Risk Profiles and scope of operations.
In conjunction with the Retrieval doctor (if onboard) manage and transport critically ill or injured patients from Prehospital scenes and between hospitals by road and helicopter and if required by fixed wing aircraft.
Access and undertake extraction of patients by the most appropriate means such as helicopter winch (if within the scope of operations of the helicopter base).
Work in a team environment to access patients located in isolated/remote locations, at heights, or aquatic environments.
Maintain patient and team safety during pre-hospital missions, extrication from remote or difficult environments and patient transport.
Provide clinical care (triage, assessment, treatment, monitoring and transport) to patients in accordance with Medical Rescues adopted Cinical Practice Guidelines, standard operating procedures and policies or in consultation with the Retrieval Doctor.
Assist the Retrieval Doctor in the use of advanced medical equipment, treatment and procedures to assess, treat and monitor patients.
Maintain accurate and thorough documentation of interactions with all patients.
Maintain patient confidentiality, dignity and privacy
Communicate effectively with other health care professionals, emergency service personnel, aviation crew, colleagues, patients and their friends / relatives.
• Participate in mentoring other Helicopter Paramedics and new medical staff when required.
• Participate in patient safety, clinical quality, risk management and clinical and
operational practice improvement activities. Including development of local operating procedures for the helicopter base or standard operating procedures for Medical Rescue
• Maintain the highest levels of integrity and professionalism with respect to the
role, including confidentiality and ethical practice.
Ensure the security, safety and maintenance of all equipment, drugs and goods
Maintain fitness, operational, clinical, aviation and aeromedical standards and
currencies as determined by Medical Rescue, the helicopter operator or statutory bodies.
Head Office responsibilities
When working at head office away from the Helicopter base, Flight paramedics are expected to assist the operations manager with tasks required to support Medical Rescue Operations which may include training, preparation of equipment, Jetski patrols, assisting with disaster deployments or other activities to ensure smooth the successful execution of medical rescue operations.
Key Accountabilities :
The Helicopter Paramedic is an integral part of a high performance multi-disciplinary team operating in a wide range of out of hospital and hospital environments. The Helicopter Paramedic is vital in assisting with the diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of critically ill or injured patients.
Challenges include:
Promoting and implementing best practice patient management in a variety of situations and environments in accordance with policies, procedures and clinical practice guidelines.
Providing high level communication and leadership to internal and external stakeholders across organisational boundaries.
Working independently or in conjunction with the Retrieval Doctor or other aeromedical agencies to assess, diagnose and manage critically ill or injured patients in challenging hospital and out of hospital circumstances.
Managing operational circumstances in a calm and professional manner, ensuring safety and appropriate patient management.
Maintaining a proactive and self-directed learning approach to the often rapidly changing technical, clinical and operational requirements of the aeromedical environment.
Recognising and managing multidisciplinary team human factors and stressors encountered during aeromedical missions.
All applicants will have to provide certification from a qualified lifeguard/instructor that they can achieve the following fitness standards prior to offer of employment
