Position overview
The Technical Services team supports the delivery of the Faculty of Science, Health, Education, and Engineering academic programs through the provision of technical services in teaching and research
laboratories and facilities. The incumbent provides technical services and support to undergraduate teaching in the School of Health and Sport Sciences predominantly in the discipline of Paramedic Science but also in other areas of the Health and Sports Science teaching programs and is a liaison between technical services and paramedic science.
Duties can include:
Responsible for the provision of technical support for the delivery of practical classes in the Paramedic facility at undergraduate level, including:
liaising with teaching staff to clarify equipment, consumables and facility requirements for practical sessions, incident scenarios and assessment sessions
revision and review of protocols for practical sessions (Standard Operating Procedures, Lab Manuals and Equipment Instructions)
setting up equipment such as manikins, emergency response kits, LifePak defibrillators and trolleys for practical and assessment sessions, pulling down practical and assessment sessions and cleaning of equipment at the conclusion of the classes
identifying, reporting and, if appropriate, solving problems in facility procedures
providing assistance to staff and students in the installation, operation, maintenance, transport and storage of equipment, and
providing technical support for research activities regarding guidance for equipment use, project design and methods for data collection
Responsible for monitoring safety activities within the teaching facilities, including:
implementing and maintaining waste management and disposal systems
overseeing the appropriate storage of teaching equipment
monitoring the appropriate use of personal protective equipment
monitoring the appropriate use of teaching equipment
documenting, filing and reporting of accidents, injuries and near misses
undertaking appropriate disinfection methods for equipment used in testing for teaching, activities
Undertake, record and monitor risk assessments in Haznet for the technical preparation of incident scenarios and equipment, and clean-up of practical sessions, and assist course coordinators with risk assessments for tutorial/practical sessions.
Make arrangements for the provision of vehicle accident scenario equipment for both teaching and assessment sessions. Maintain the vehicle accident scenario equipment and surrounds for service and function.
Assist with digital data capture and database management:
responsibility for management of video files captured during teaching , and apply measures to ensure information is secure and routinely backed up, and
maintenance of lab and facility bookings, and databases relating to equipment hire, calibrations, and inventory
Implement and comply with cleaning and maintenance schedules for equipment, instruments and computer hygiene within the laboratories. This includes maintenance of paramedic simulator manikins and associated electronic monitoring devices used in emergency response kits, and vehicle accident scenario equipment.
Perform stock control activities including:
identifying stock (consumables, and reagents) required within the teaching facilities
recording of consumable and reagents used for individual courses
ordering consumables as required for practical sessions, incident scenarios and assessment sessions
consulting with teaching staff and advising the Coordinator, Technical Services (Health and Sport Sciences) of items that fall outside standard ordering activities
maintenance of equipment calibration and inventory databases, and
conducting stock-takes.
Other duties within the range of skills normally associated with a position of this classification in an evolving environment as required by the Coordinator of Technical Services, Health and Sport Sciences.
Participate in and assist with the University Open Day, information sessions, and demonstrations for schools or other organisations.

Selection criteria
Essential
Completion of a relevant Degree in Paramedic Science / Diploma of Health Science (Ambulance Officer), and/or an equivalent combination of industry specific experience and education/training.
Previous experience in provision of a broad range of activities in support of undergraduate teaching in a Paramedics discipline environment.
Working knowledge of policies, guidelines and legislation relevant to laboratory safety including work health and safety requirements, human and research ethics, and familiarity with waste streams generated in a paramedic teaching facility.
Previous experience in performing, documenting and implementing outcomes of risk assessments in a laboratory environment.
Well-developed problem solving and analytical skills relevant to the technical support of paramedic disciplines,
Relevant experience in the operation of Microsoft Office software and applications in a networked environment.
A high level of demonstrable interpersonal skills including the ability to:
communicate effectively both orally and in writing
work flexibly and cooperatively as part of a team and independently
work under minimal supervision in a high volume work environment, and
use initiative in adapting to new situations
manage self and time effectively
Possession of a First Aid Certificate or current paramedic certificate of practice.
Desirable
Possession of a current class ‘C’ Drivers Licence.
